Day 3 - Savannah GA

Day 3 - Savannah Exploring Day
Today all of are going to drive to Savannah, GA, which is about 40km to the South to explore the historic city of Savannah.

What a wonderful place, old homes and city squares, most of this city was created in the early 1730's and we could not have asked for better weather, sunny and +22c, no wind either.  We wondered around the city and had lunch at Goose Feathers at 39 Barnard St. http://www.goosefeatherscafe.com/ .

Next stop was historic River Street with the paddle wheel ships, lots of shops and of course restaurants and bars, this is a restaurant city for sure.

We headed back to Hilton Head, but no visit to HHI would complete with out a stop at the Harbor Town Lighthouse, this the lighthouse always associated with Hilton Head, red and white strips.  Just so you know it is non functional.

Last duty of the day was washing the GLK, which was covered in salt and grime from the 1,4000km trip down.

Tonight we are off to dinner at Alexander's Seafood Restaurant, within the plantation, so it is 5 minute drive.  http://www.alexandersrestaurant.com/
Check out the motorcycle in the restaurant on the web site.

Day 2 - Beckley WV to Hilton Head, SC

Day 2 - Driving to Hilton Head, SC Total: 756km for the day, 9hrs
Today we transitioned from Winter to Spring, and a temperature of +21c by the time we reached Hilton Head Island..

We got under way at 8:15am, with the car covered in frost from the night, no snow but the temp was -8c and the parking lot was ice.

We had bright sunshine which was a relief from the gray weather of the past weeks, but lots of snow on the side of the road and in the tree tops, made for a picture perfect landscape.  In about 30minutes of driving we started to notice a change in snow depth and by the time we reached the border of West Virgina and Virgina the snow was only 5cm deep.

In reaching the junction of I-81 and I-77 the snow that remained was on the shadow side of the hills and the temp was up to +6c.

We took I-485 to bypass Charlotte, NC, this is a new ring road and saved us about 30 minutes, there were hardly any cars on it and it moved above the speed limit.

As we stopped for lunch in Rock Hill, SC the temp was +15c and of course no snow.  We had lunch at a interesting Pizza restaurant called Empire State Pizza Deli & Bar, worth the stop.

After lunch we continued on our way I-77 to I-26 to I-95 and then off to Hilton Head with Karen taking on the afternoon shift.

We are staying in Hilton Head at Palmetto Dunes in St. Andrews Common with are good friends Sheila and Ted Gail (from Oakville) which  is very nice private condo complex overlooking the gold course and the lagoon has its own 6ft alligator named "mosses", checked with the Euclid he does not this guy.

We parked the trailer in a secure storage area run by Public Storage which about 1km away, so the trailer and motorcycle are safe for a few days.

Day 1 - NOTL to Beckley , WV

Day 1 - Driving to Beckley, WV Total: 788km for the day, 9hrs, 30mins
Today was a typical Winter day, dull, cold and wet, no sun at all.

We got under way at 7:50am, which was about 30 minutes later than I had planned, but my new line is I am retired and I don't care.  The roads were mostly dry, with some wet spots, no snow and no ice, that was good.  We crossed the border at Fort Erie/Buffalo with no cars in front of us and two questions citizenship and what was the license of the trailer, then we were off.

Stopped at the T/A truck stop for a Wilson Wily CB antenna, made a big difference in reception.

I drove to 11:30 and after our lunch stop (can't remember the name - "Barney Version" syndrome*), Karen took over driving, so I could continue my sleeping, she drove 5 hrs, to Beckley.

The GLK is great on gas around town, but with the trailer attached - lots of gas, every 300km, at $45@, so you only go around once as I say.

This evening we went to a great Italian Restaurant, called Pasquale Mira's Italian Restaurant (www.beckleyitalian.com), worth the stop/visit you will not be disappointed, price right too.

That is about it, tomorrow it is off to Hilton Head, another 750km+ day.
